'This is a cautionary tale': Worker quits after being refused a promotion despite doing the work of 3 people, they hire 3 people to fill their role

  • A business woman hands over a letter of resignation.
  • I quit my job after they refused to promote me. They are now hiring 3 people to replace me.

Feeling vindicated and annoyed today. Long story short: I quit my job last week. I left because the workload is insane, I'm constantly taken advantage of, the leadership team is a joke, and they refused to give me a raise even though I do the jobs of multiple people, have had nothing but glowing performance reviews, and have been told that the company would not exist
  • without me, since I helped support the company through a god awful time. I digress. They begged me to stay. Pleaded. I said no. Now, they're scrambling to fill the gap. I get an email asking me to review the new job descriptions. They are hiring 3 people to replace me and the work I'm currently doing.
  • The duties for the "one job" I'm doing now were dispersed over 3 different job descriptions. Honestly, good for them for realizing one person cannot do it alone. But, I'm not going to lie, it feels pretty fucking validating to see that they need THREE people to fill my one job. As vindicated as I feel, I also feel ashamed that I went on as long as I did, putting up with all
  • this bullshit and doing the jobs of 3 people at once. They also could've saved themselves a hell of a lot of money by just giving me the raise I asked for. Fuck work.
  • TLDR: Quit my job because the workload was off the charts, and the compensation did not match the effort. They begged me to stay, but I said no. They're scrambling to hire, and they need to hire 3 people to replace the work I've been doing as 1 person.
  • EDIT: A lot of people seemed to be confused about me reviewing the job descriptions. I quit last week, but I gave a two week notice. I am still employed by the company, and they asked me to review the descriptions as part of my every day work.
  • For those saying that me reviewing the descriptions will contribute to new employees joining a toxic workplace: these roles are going to be filled either way. People will take them. I'm not some snake leading vulnerable people to the company because I edited a job description. Now, if any prospective employee reaches out
  • to me about my time there and why I left, I will be brutally honest and tell them to run far away. I've also already left negative Glassdoor and Indeed reviews. I'm doing what I can do.
  • A young businesswoman looks stressed at her desk.
  • Commenters came in with their opinions on this workplace matter.

Sure_Acanthacea... This is a cautionary tale for everybody. Act your wage, and you won't get tasked with more work.
  • Extreme-Slice-1010 Never ever go above and beyond, management DON'T CARE about their employees, all they care is PROFITS AND THEIR BONUSES
  • Oddgitll They want you to review your replacements? Only if they pay you a consultation fee. Nothing for free my friend.
  • brandwyn I have long said it that there is no actual reward for competency at a job; the only reward is more work. I'm so sorry you had to endure this, OP, and good on you for leaving.
  • MyLadyBits Don't help them do shit. Look after yourself.
  • ta... Spent 10 years at a machinery manufacturer. Built controls, programmed, could rebuild the every piece of heavy machinery they manufactured. Wrote repair manuals for the most complex equipment. Did it all over the world. Asked to be paid for the hours that I billed customers. Not even 1.5 ot...just the hours.
  • Nope can't do it. All righty then... 6 months later left. So when they found people with all my skillsets they got up and walked out after being told the pay. Mid interview. So they broke duties up.
  • Hired 3 people to replace me. 2 of the new hires quit after 6 months. Too much work for the pay.
  • ElTupacabraXXX Offer to consult for 10x your previous pay. Or more if you feel like it!
  • yiddishisfuntosay Yeah it's honestly better for both the company and you to create a situation where you're not there longer than like 3 years to avoid them getting dependent on you and taking advantage. They also benefit as they learn they
  • can't take advantage as often, so they spread the load out more accurately. Or don't and never get their slot filled. Either way, the 'human' aspect is better preserved. Just my take on it.
  • KaLogain This happened to me as well. I was taking 45% of the support calls for a 6 person team. They actually gave me the promotion I was wanting. But by then I had already started looking and it was actually too little too late. It was a joke, 5%. They had given me better raises than that. They had to hire three people after I left.
  • yayaface15 I unfortunately learned this the hard way also, I was at my previous job for 8 years I stopped going above and beyond but was still meeting my goals but my manager saw it as doing less work, I was put on PIP refused to sign it because the goals they were setting were unobtainable for 1 person alone so I was let go now about 6 people do the job I used to do alone.
  • mybabylasko This is such an amazing feeling, congrats. Similarly, I quit a company after they wouldn't give me a $10,000 raise, and they had to hire an advertising agency to cover my job. Then when my job finally got reposted, the base salary was $50,000 more.
  • w3stoner Happened to me once aswell. I don't mind working a 70hr work week here or there. But after 3 months of it I tendered my resignation directly to HR. No one in my department had any clue I was about to leave. They replaced me with a team of 5. It was a great day for me. Very empowering
  • KKLante I quit last month after 3 years, it frees your soul.
  • Super-Visor Happened to me too a few years ago, split my old role into three jobs exactly
  • abgry_krakow87 With them pleading you to stay, that's ripe room for negotiation! "Sure I will stay, but I demand the promotion and the nice hefty raise and benefits I deserve."
  • Zadsta Similar thing happened to my partner. Was doing the work of 3 people, got burnt out, asked to switch departments. Management tried so hard to get him to stay and dangled the "if you do this for 3 more months you may get promoted" carrot in front of
  • him. He still wanted out. Now 3 people do his 1 job and one of the first people they placed actually quit because even 1/3rd of the work was too much. Leadership still views him as a quitter, but he doesn't give a shit and is much happier in his new role.
